I don't know about all that. Backgammon has the same type of skill, but no mitigating factors for it's variance except plays which can be made inside of the game. Though I might be confusing "complex" and "highest skill requirement". Poker's also pretty brutal, and is also ruled by probability maths, which can be done without writing or calculator (it takes quite a bit of training, though.)

Starcraft II is also hella complicated. A machine would only be able to optimize the timing for a specific build. But scouting, and fielding an army that wins enough skirmishes to take an absolute macro lead is all critical thinking exercises, which machines fail at.

Being able to "embed a universal Turing machine in a game of Magic" also means the following:

:idea: You can calculate 1000 decimals of Euler's number e while playing Magic.
