Wizards is announcing a new product called Modern Horizons on Twitch.

That thread contains some card spoilers immediately beneath the bulleted list. For those who want to avoid spoilers, I'll summarise the non-spoilery set details from that thread:

  • Contains new cards that "skip Standard" and are Modern-legal.
  • The set is a mix of reprints and new cards. All reprints come from non-Modern sets: pre-8th edition, Commander, Conspiracy, Planechase, and others are all on the table.
  • Releases June 14, 2019.
  • Prerelease weekend June 8-9; booster draft.
  • Preview season at the end of May.
  • Releases in paper and on Magic Online. Boosters will be $6.99 on Magic Online. It is not coming to Arena for now.
  • There will be a buy-a-box promo, and it will be a new-to-Modern reprint.
  • 254 cards.
  • Set code: MH1

I'm looking forward to the fun Commander cards that might come out of Modern-oriented design. (Although all the good ones will probably be expensive as hell.)

.... Thats awesome!

A "new to modern reprint" is very interesting. Something from pre-modern being brought in.

Also there are no excuses not to print the hell out of the modern staples. The critical factor is going to be, how much does a box cost?

It has the looks of the second set of the Dominaria block.

Unfortunately, all of the reprints in this set will be new to modern. That means no card currently legal in modern will be in this set. I think they want to distance it from the Masters products.

MTGO Price has been announced as 6.99 a pack.
We're going to presume that means $250 a box.

$250 with no prorate for buying the entire box?

But $250 would be a very, very high markup from distro prices. If the set isn't fantastic (and probably even if it is because unl print run) $250 will never hold.

edit: went to learn more about msrp historically, see my next post

We're going to presume that means $250 a box.

Two issues with that assumption:

1)You're assuming MTGO MSRP = physical MSRP. There's a possibility they stopped publicizing the MSRP for the products so they can make online/offline different prices.
2)You're assuming 36 pack boxes. If this is being positioned to replace the Masters sets, it may end up as 24 packs/box.

MTGO's price is a price, not an MSRP. But they have always sold online for MSRP which is designed to be a price consumers will support, most likely to resemble the paper buying experience (and i suppose because people just think nothing of paying the same price, but really digital cards cost less and end up worth less so that's a smart way to increase income i guess). I think it's closer to a presumption than an assumption to say stores will be around $7 a pack.
But, MSRP has always been 2x that of the cost to buy from a distributor. In a way, one could suggest $320 is the MSRP as retailer has reported a price of 163 from distro. But no one really sells for MSRP, MSRP on standard boxes has been 144 for a long time but no one really pays that (i hope).

Modern Horizons is 36 packs, not 24.

If anyone is looking, there are preorders for 199 at the cheapest right now at Gamenerdz.

$199 with zero reprints seems a little spicy. I mean, whatever the market will bear and all that, but this is not a limited print run product, from what I'm seeing. Additionally, there isn't the guaranteed foil per pack either, so not seeing the incentive for the extra price bump.

That said, I am all for formats getting a shakeup, especially eternal formats, so let's see how they manage this.

There are reprints, but they are from non-Modern-legal sets.
