I'm interested - what do people see as the commonest Generals? I guess more generally, are there distinct player preferences for the sets their Generals source from?

Personally, I have:
Sek Kuar (Coldsnap)
Teneb, Numot (Time Spiral block)
Horobi (Champions)
Rameses Overdark, Dakkon Blackblade, Sol K'Anar (Legends)
Kamahl (Odyssey)
Karona (Onslaught block)
Tolsimir (Ravnica)
- so something of a preference for Legends then, and also the new Planar Chaos Dragons

On the other hand the wife has:
Stonebrow, Oros (Time Spiral block)
Rith, Cromat (Invasion block)
Doran (Lorwyn)

So likes her newer sets...

So here's a poll for those that like 'em, I'll add P3K if anyone can really make a case...

Ulasht and Isperia both happen to be in Ravnica block, so that's my answer.

But I don't think the block a general from is really relevant. Chances are most generals are from the relatively new blocks, due to the fact that those cards are a lot more powerful than the old Legendary creatures (power creep). Sure, there are some golden oldies (Sol'Kanar), but mostly it's stuff like PLC dragons or Doran that get all the attention, due to availablity and power.

My generals are all spread out over different sets...

Konda, Lord of Eiganjo (Champions of Kamigawa)

Multani, Maro Sorcerer (Urza's Legacy)

Ertai, Wizard Adept (Exodus)

Ashling, The Pilgrim (Lorwyn)

and soon to be:
Visara, the Dreadful (Onslaught)

I used to have Rasputin Dreamweaver from legends, he is surprisingly good and I only know of 1 other person who uses him as a general. I recently decided to cut that deck into Ertai and Konda though because I had too many good cards to put into 1 deck for white and blue. I have also come to like mono colored edh decks more than multi colored.

I don't think the block relevant at all really, I kind of wanted to do a poll of what people thought the most popular generals were, but couldn't be arsed to write that many options into a poll. I figured, whatever, I'll just put up some random chatter so those of us with too little life outside magic can debate irrelevant minutiae. It so happened that I observed 3 of the most popular (I think) are Garza-Zol, Zur and Sek'Kuar, all from Coldsnap. (My others for the "top 10" - from what I've seen - popular generals are probably Experiment Kraj, Teneb, Doran, Horde of Notions, Jhoira, maybe Dakkon and Sol'kanar - which gives 2 Time Spiral block, 2 Legends and 2 Lorwyn). And I'd have to add Mereike and Phelddagrif to the poll, another 2 more in Ice Age block.

By and large I don't think the PC dragons are as powerful as the Invasion originals.

It's true that they aren't quite as powerful, but by virtue of the fact that they're the only legends in their colours (aside from Doran), they're definitely among the most popular. Vorosh and Teneb are probably the most talked about generals, on these boards.

i voted based on my quick, vague impression of our princeton metagame, but i should have been smarter and tallied my decks.

I think it is safe to say Nebuchanezzar's old school charm got edged by the 'get in there' aggro control feel i want for the deck that Wydwen brings, so big swing from my one Legends general to a super recent one. I want to tutor up Conspiracy with the deck and 'go rogue', protect my critters with counters, and use the evasive guys in there already to rack up prowling points on the good cards like Knowledge exploitation and notorious Throng.
Toss is instants, flashing critters, Bitterblossom (made for an instant-filled multiplayer deck) and funfun.

But when I look at it, a lot of them are around Ravnica.

Round here the recent generals are most popular. I've got Horde of Notions as my main deck, and the PC dragons are popular. I'm also fond of Legends generals. However my personal favourite are Portal 3K legends with Horsemanship.

My playgoup is made of mainly people who hadn't started to play until (at the earliest) Onslaught block.

Thus, new generals are way more common than old ones.

Oddly enough, I tend to use generals from new sets that were referenced in old sets- -Coldsnap and Time Spiral...

Sek Kuar
Stonebrow
Saffi
Jhoira

Next project will probably be Dralnu.

I'd make a Sek'Kuar deck, but I'm already using him in a normal 60 card deck..

Horde of Notions is a good point. He seems to be THE 5 colour guy at the moment.

You, sir, have balls. Pray someone else is playing flagbearers, and look up any and all terrible artifact damage prevention cards. I picked him once, and played the deck with great success without never once casting the general. deck with red, run awaaaaaaayyyyy!

Kor Dirge too. Still, wouldn't you be better of with Toshiro Umezawa?

I'm playing:
ZoZu the punisher (Just finished building)
Sygg River Guide
and Treva

at the moment, so i can't really answer any specific category for the poll.

There are a lot of EDH decks around here of various types, but i think there are more Planar chaos dragons than anything else, i haven't done a count or anything, it's pretty diverse.

Things i've seen over the last few weeks:
Intet
Teneb
Numot
Rasputin
Niv Mizzet
Lin Sivvi
Green Khamal
Sliver Overlord
Se'kur
