Wizards has come out with the complete list of card variants for Unstable:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/a ... 2017-12-06Five cards have only aesthetic variants (flavor text or art):
- Amateur Auteur: 4 variants, art/flavor text differs.
- Beast In Show: 4 variants, art/flavor text differs.
- Extemely Slow Zombie: 4 variants, art/flavor text differs.
- Novellamental: 4 variants, flavor text differs.
- Target Minotaur: 4 variants, art differs.
Eight cards have functional variants:
- Everythingamajig: 6 variants, rules text differs.
- Garbage Elemental: 6 variants, rules text differs.
- Ineffable Blessing: 6 variants, rules text differs.
- Curious/Delighted/Despondent/Enraged Killbot: 4 variants, four different names plus flavor text differs.
- Knight of the Kitchen Sink: 6 variants, rules text differs.
- Secret Base: 5 variants, one per faction. Watermark differs which is aesthetic except it affects the function of the card.
- Sly Spy: 6 variants, rules text differs.
- Very Cryptic Command: 6 variants, rules text differs as well as art in one artist-matters variant.
What is the Rules Committee's stance on using variants? May we use the 6 different Knights of the Kitchen Sink in our EDH deck? 4 different killbots? 2-5 secret bases?
There's a few interpretations, all of which seem valid in their own ways to me:
- all the functional variants are all different cards, so we can have one of each.
- variants of a card are all just the same card because they have the same name, so you can only have 1, so you pick your variant and go with that. (Maybe 4 different killbots.)
- you can have unique variants as long as their rules or name differ. (meaning all 4 killbots, all the rules text variants, but only 1 secret base.)
I'd be interested in some guidance suggesting which to go with as a community.
