What is Brawl?

Well, Gavin Verhey is going to tell you all about it tomorrow here on DailyMTG, but the short version is that it’s a Commander variant that uses only Standard-legal cards. It’s a ton of fun, it’s been one of the most popular “for fun” formats at Wizards of the Coast this past year, and we’re introducing it with Dominaria.

I suspect this is just as exciting for me as Tiny Leaders was, but for some this is probably a lot of fun. Restrictions breed creativity.

I wonder what more there could be in the rules?

If the short version is: Commander but with the Standard card-pool, what could the long version of that be? What else is there to say?

I imagine that the article will have some deck ideas and some history behind why they are making this variant format, but are there other rules that need to be made? Banned cards?

I stopped playing Standard because it rotates out and I don't want to update all my decks all the time (and I like playing with the older cards)

This format is clearly not for me

Perhaps the wise move would have been to make a format to create an incentive & use for just-rotated Standard cards (as those are some of the most affordable cards to pick up) while still creating a boundary to separate itself from the most expensive Modern/Legacy cards.

I wonder what they could name such a format..

I am guessing that Planeswalkers will be eligible as commanders for this format. There are only 45 Legendary Creatures in Standard at the moment, but there are another 28 Legendary Planeswalkers. Still won't be much to choose from especially for two and three color decks.

Dominaria will give the format a much needed increase in depth, which is probably why they are unveiling it now, but even if it somehow is popular enough to survive a few years, I doubt that it will be very fun when Dominaria inevitably rotates, unless they plan on doing a legendary themed set every two years.

Honestly I will probably end up building a deck for this format. I draft a lot, and I really don't have much to do with most of the cards I open. A few people in my playgroup have built "Block" EDH decks, and I think a deck from this format would probably be comparable in power level. I see it as a decent way to give new generals a try before I decide I want to build them with older, harder to find cards.

That is, of course, unless my Brawl deck isn't legal to play in a game of traditional Commander (this is the main problem I had with tiny leaders), in which case I probably won't touch this format at all.

I don't remember the specific rules of Tiny Leaders, but why could a Tiny Leaders deck not be played in a regular Commander game? I thought the only changed rule was that no card could cost more than 3 mana.

It could, but for what I hope are obvious reasons a normal Commander deck will stomp all over a Tiny Leaders deck most of the time

Also you have half as many cards.

60 cards, colour identity and singleton rules apply, advised multiplayer but could (?) be 1v1. Cardpool is everything legal in Standard (so, no Aetherworks Marvel).

Oh, and your Commander can be any Standard-legal legendary creature or planeswalker.

For someone who is sick and tired of seeing Sol Rings, Demonic Tutors and boring two-card combos in Commander, this does seem worthy of a try. And being able to use Planeswalkers as commanders is just the cherry on the cake!

PW as Commanders in Brawl is perfectly okay with me, since Doubling Season is not in the format... No gross abuse of PW.

None of the people I routinely play EDH with are ones buying up packs of the new stuff when it comes out so... I'll probably be passing on this.

It looks like a format for those already doing a lot of standard and/or limited. I don't fall into that category :)

It'll be interesting to see if the RC decide to follow Brawl in allowing planeswalkers to be legal Commanders by default. My gut says no, but I'm now wondering.

I noticed a glaring hole in their plan though... There will be 2 potential colorless commanders when Brawl becomes a thing, the new Karn and Hope of Ghirapur... But... Wastes are NOT standard legal right now.

That's something they need to do something about.
