They brought Core Sets back EXCELLENTLY.
The first couple small batches of spoilers did not inspire a lot of optimism. But now that much of the set has been revealed... I have to agree wholeheartedly. This set looks wonderful. I feel like they did a lot of things well here, but the main takeaway, IMO, is that they really nailed what the core set SHOULD feel like.
The cards are interesting and playable, but (mostly) don't feel super pushed, power-wise. There are a lot of cards that, for EDH purposes, you would not be ashamed to run, but also would not be ashamed to NOT run.
Basically, they hit that sweet spot of respectable, but not instant-staple, must-run-in-every-deck powerful.
The designs are mostly simple enough for newer players to grasp, yet interesting enough for veterans to not be completely unimpressed by.
The Elder Dragons are mostly interesting/unique/suprising designs that feels like they were really flexing their creative design muscles.
I have some quibbles here and there, but overall this set feels like exactly what every core set should be. It reminds me of "good ol' days" Magic sets as well. Really excited about the future of Magic after seeing Dominaria, BBD and this set.
