So, in France, EDH is very popular for 10 months or so. But, people are not very fond of multiplayer, and there are not a lot of events to play the funny 6+ players EDH games. Thus, EDH in France turned quickly into 1 vs 1 fights.

A few considerations :

There are not a lot of broken generals. (Erayo may be one of them).

Counters found a place in those fights (there is no card disadvantage in 1 vs 1).

Combos that kill 1 player are way better than in multiplayer EDH.

First thing first : 40 lifes is way too much and aggro decks were not fun to play at all. Quickly, thanks to a french forum (mtgfrance.com), EDH players decided to adopt 30 lifes for the starting life total.

Broken combos/generals are not played long, cause none wants to play with "the guy that wins every game". (fi niv-mizzet+curiosity or braids+ mana crypt T2...)

Fun plays and cool interactions are the main concern. So, I think that the EDH spirit is respected.

Hey there,

That's a long time I'm playing EDH in heads-up, having disliked all my life multiplayer games.

Here are the cards I'm fed up with :
Sundering Titan simply prevents from playing 5 color and is too easy to bring into play.
Mindslaver is boring.
Skullclamp makes card advantage for its player too important.
I'm unsure about Erayo but it's likely to be broken.

On the contrary, cards like Kokusho are just, well, as good as in Block constructed :p

Kevin.

To go in your way, mindslaver in heads up has only one player to target. As there is no politics in 1 vs 1, there really no fun at all for this kind of cards.

I just want to say that Erayo isn't broken. She's a strong general, sure, but not insane at all. I play it, and I've bad match up vs aggro general like Isamaru or Radha. 30 lifes are enough to turn broken cards into good cards.

Well, after starting a thread in the rules discussion forum asking about a seperate 1v1 rule set and banned list, I received this reply:
Sheldon wrote:
"Official" Commander is a multiplayer game. 1v1 has no impact on the Rules Committee's philosophies or decisions. We recognize the fact that there is a 1v1 community, and people are welcome to play whatever variants on the format they wish (in that regard, we don't see much difference between 1v1 and Pauper, for example), but as far as by-the-book MtG: Commander goes, it's multiplayer all the way.

So, it appears that the French rule set is as close to an official set we are going to get.

Good news is the French list should receive a huge update soon.
Keeping it up-to-date with announcements every three months is something we'll try to lean towards.

Kevin.

I saw an "official" 1v1 banlist posted a minute ago, and now it's gone. What gives?
